Traditional Ryukyu Kobujutsu

The Ryukyu Kobujutsu Association of Great Britain (RKAGB) is the UK branch of the Ryukyu Kobujutsu Hozon Shinko Kai in Japan. Its teaching lineage is direct:     Shinken Taira → Motokatsu Inoue → Julian Mead Shihan → RKAGB

Julian Mead Shihan, 8th Dan, spent six years living and training in Japan under Motokatsu Inoue before establishing the RKAGB in Britain in 1986. This gives students access to a structured system of traditional Kobujutsu, taught within a clear and continuing lineage. The quality of instruction and depth of study has led to the growth of the RKAGB, and invitations for Julian Mead Shihan to teach internationally.

More than learning weapons

Ryukyu Kobujutsu includes the study of Bo, Sai, Tonfa, Nunchaku, Kama, Tekko, Tinbe and Surujin, through fundamental technique, kata and partnered training.

The weapons develop and test principles that are central to good martial arts:

  • body connection

  • posture and balance

  • distance and timing

  • movement and coordination

  • control and accuracy

For experienced Karate practitioners, Kobujutsu can offer a fresh way to explore principles they already know.

A Bo changes your understanding of distance. Tonfa expose weaknesses in body connection. Sai place different demands on grip, alignment and control. You do not need to change your Karate. Kobujutsu gives you another way to explore it.

Experience it for yourself

The best way to understand Kobujutsu is to train.

You can:

Try a regular class. Your first lesson is free. If you are not local to Hounslow, on-line training is possible.

Attend a course. Experience the system without making a long-term commitment.

Invite us to your club. We offer introductory training for Karate clubs, instructors and senior students.
